Amatis/Nextek recently partnered with Parata Solutions to support a study conducted by the Illinois Institute of Technology on the energy efficiency of "Smart Shades". The study considered three modes of shade control: manual, scheduling, and dynamic (occupancy control). The 37th floor of the Willis Tower, formerly known as the Sears Tower, was chosen for the study.

Due to the complexity of the building codes in Chicago, the Amatis System turned out to be a perfect control solution with its wireless capabilities. By integrating the Parata Shade's Sonessee motor with our system, we're able to provide a wireless control solution that meets all the requirements for the study and the flexibility to provide the occupants of the space with an easy and "touchless" way to control their new Parata shades.

How we Integrated with the Shades

To operate a Sonesse Motor with the Amatis system, four connections must be made:

Use cases for this solution

Amatis can integrate with the Somfy devices and that allows us to:

  • be part of the Smart Shade solution in other projects

  • get away with not adding new wiring to projects in Chicago that require conduit

  • pre-set the devices to create a plug and play solution for installers

  • allow the building owner to not only know the light levels in each room, but also the shade levels.

Known Issues

The speed in which the switch communicates with the shades will need to slow down so the signal has time to move through the channels to communicate with the motors.
